This PAGE WILL TELL YOU ABOUT SHARK NETS
In this picture, there is a simple, unsophisticated shark net. Shark nets are made to keep shark attacks from happening. Though they have that cause, they are also killing sharks. They are reducing shark attacks, but they are also reducing the shark population, which is a problem. The shark population is now very low because of the shark nets. Other animals such as rays, dolphins, and whales can also be stuck in these shark nets. Shark nets are made to enable swimmers and surfers to do what they want when they want, but in this picture that is not true. Shark nets are not always used for safety reasons, but are used for psychological reasons as well. More 40% of all shark net entanglements happen on the Beach side of the nets. Only about 8% of the 320 km of the eastern coast has either sharks nets or drum lines. They started to be installed in the 50's and 60's. Shark nets have killed more than 33,000 sharks in the last thirty years, and less than 12% were targeted shark species (Great Whites, Zambezi, and Tigers). About 25,000 harmless were killed, even though they didn't even pose a threat to anyone. Their death however, poses a threat for the economy and the environment. They also kill other animals like rays, turtles, and dolphins. Shark Fishing has also become a problem. Shark nets do not fully act as a full barrier between the sea and the beach because the ends are not connected to the shoreline. Sharks can swim over the nets, where about 40% of all entanglements happen. Some people are saying that the more sharks killed, the better and that if Shark nets are removed, shark attacks will increase rapidly.
Millions of other animals are also killed. In this picture (left) a person is swimming by, which explains my sentence up on the first paragraph. And the side closest to you that you see is not even in the water, but a fair height above the water. Shark nets are not really a complete barrier net between the land and ocean. This is good for some sharks, but the people might not like that the sharks are swimming right under.
